Lee has always seen himself as a social drinker, but as he gets older, he’s found himself thinking more about his health and cutting back.
Approaching 50 and looking to improve his health, Lee decided to rethink his drinking habits. We followed his journey as he cut back to improve his sleep and wellbeing, and discovered that drinking less actually brought him closer to his friends.
Lee has always seen himself as a social drinker. For him, alcohol was strongly linked with having fun, spending time with friends, and making the most of weekends. But as he found himself approaching 50, he started to think differently about his health and wellbeing.
He would often drink at home with his girlfriend or out with friends. He says he drank around 15 to 20 pints a week, usually across one or two sessions, and would sometimes have six to eight pints in a single sitting. For Lee, the goal wasn't to stop drinking completely. He wanted to feel better, improve his sleep, and see whether cutting back could have a positive effect on his mental wellbeing.
Taking a step back helped him understand how easy it was to slip into routines without really thinking about them, and how making small changes could have a big impact.
Opening up to friends about his decision to cut back led to more honest conversations and a sense of shared understanding. Rather than feeling like he was making changes alone, Lee discovered that many of his friends could relate to his experiences.
"The conversations with my friends have changed for the better as well. I don't feel like I'm on my own now my mates are on board with it too."
Today, Lee feels more aware of his drinking habits and more in control of the choices he makes around alcohol. What started as an opportunity to reflect on his drinking has helped him discover that cutting back doesn't mean missing out. Instead, it's helped him feel healthier, sleep better, strengthen friendships, and have inspired new ways of spending time together, including plans for an alcohol-free hiking holiday.
For Lee, he cut back on alcohol and worked towards finding a balance that felt right for him. And the results surprised him.
