Drinkaware exists to help people make better choices about their drinking so we’re delighted to share data demonstrating the impact we had in 2017.

Here are a few numbers for you

Website and tools

Over 9 million people came to our website for information, advice and support. Over 800,000 people used our online tool to find out about the unit and calorie content in their drinks and close to 400,000 people took an alcohol self-assessment test to learn about the extent to which their drinking may be harmful.


Our app, which people can use on their smart phones, was downloaded by more than 100,000 people who wanted to reduce the amount they are drinking.

Research revealed that after a week app users achieved a marked reduction in how much they were drinking and that 12 weeks later it was still proving to be beneficial.

But not all our work at Drinkaware is based on digital tools.


We continued our campaign targeting midlife men aged 45-64 drinking over the low risk drinking guidelines. We worked with TalkSport and Derby County Football Club to ensure that this ‘Have a little less, feel a lot better’ campaign and health-harm videos reached more than 5 million men.

We also reached people directly in the community through the delivery of alcohol brief advice, in community settings, pharmacies and ASDA supermarkets. The advice was delivered face to face to almost 3,000 people as well as through the DrinkCompare Calculator.  

We’ve been providing  training for Drinkaware Crew, who are venue staff protecting the welfare and wellbeing of young adults on a night out, and in 2017 we expanded the scheme to 13 new venues in four cities which helped to support  4,000 people.

Our campaign challenging the normalisation of drunken sexual harassment got a lot of interest from the national media and we’ve seen an increase in the number of people rejecting the idea that being drunk is an excuse for inappropriate behaviour.

Drinkaware’s ambition, goals and targets for the next 5 years are challenging, but we’ve made a good start and are committed to continuing to help as many people as possible across the UK get the right information and advice about alcohol, at the right time and in the right way.
