Drinkaware response to alcohol-specific death statistics for Scotland
Drinkaware CEO, Karen Tyrell responds to the publication of alcohol-specific deaths registered in Scotland in 2024 by the National Records of Scotland.
"It is encouraging to see alcohol-specific deaths in Scotland start to fall after many years of increases. While this is progress, we cannot be complacent and more must be done to drive these numbers down further.
"These deaths are preventable, and today’s announcement is a reminder of the harm alcohol causes and the lives lost. We must tackle the inequalities that are exacerbating these death rates head on, particularly the impact of deprivation and the fact that men remain disproportionately affected.
"At Drinkaware, we work with people across Scotland and the UK to better understand their drinking through things like our Drinking Check, so they can identify if their drinking is putting their health at serious risk and provide straightforward advice to help people cut back."
