Prosecco is a sparkling white wine from Italy that can be served on its own or mixed with an aperitif and soda to make a spritz cocktail.
How many units in prosecco?
To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, the UK Chief Medical Officers (CMO) low risk drinking guidelines advise it is safest not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis.
A 125ml glass of 12% Alcohol by Volume (ABV) prosecco contains 1.5 units.
Drinking just over nine 125ml glasses (around a bottle and a half) of 12% ABV prosecco a week means you’ll exceed these guidelines. Doing this regularly could increase your chances of developing long-term conditions like heart disease and seven types of cancer.
One 125ml glass of 12% ABV prosecco contains 86 calories – which is slightly more than a chocolate digestive biscuit. This would take around nine minutes of running to burn off. Having three glasses would be the equivalent in calories of eating a classic hamburger from a fast food restaurant. Drinking too much prosecco means taking on extra calories on top of your food. Over time, this can lead to weight gain and start to affect your appearance.
Checking prosecco’s Alcohol by Volume (ABV) will tell you how strong it is. Look out for the ABV on the label, showing what percentage of the drink is alcohol, or ask at the bar.
For example, a 12% ABV glass of prosecco contains 12% pure alcohol. The higher the percentage, the more alcohol is in the drink.
Like champagne, prosecco is often linked with celebrations and special occasions. And if the host is often refilling your glass it can be difficult to keep tabs on how much alcohol you’re drinking.
To make sure you don’t drink more alcohol than you’d like, try these top tips:
- Pick a sophisticated soft drink. A well-mixed mocktail can have the same premium feel as prosecco, just without the alcohol. Use sparkling mineral water or soda to add some feel-good fizz.
- Go lower-alcohol. Reduce your units by swapping a 12% ABV prosecco for the new generation of low alcohol sparkling wines of 5.5% ABV or less. It’s an easy way to halve the number of units you’re drinking. If low-alcohol alternatives aren’t available you can cut back on booze by opting for a Bucks Fizz, in which half the sparkling wine is replaced with orange juice.
- Find new ways to celebrate. Who says celebrations have to involve alcohol? Whether it’s a friend’s birthday or a big win at work, a group activity can be a great alternative to an evening at the pub.
- Put down your glass. At parties people can sometimes refill your glass as you socialise, without you realising. If you’ve had enough put your glass aside when it’s empty to stop automatic refills.
