Alcohol-free and low alcohol drinks in the UK
A fifth of UK adults use alcohol-free drinks as a way of moderating their alcohol consumption. Drinkaware wanted to understand more about this trend and commissioned independent research to understand more about how frequent drinkers use these drinks in their everyday lives, and to understand what might encourage others to try them as substitute for an alcoholic drink.
What did we find?
- Understanding of the terms alcohol-free and low alcohol across the UK is low
- One in four UK adults drank an alcohol-free or low alcohol product in 2021
- UK adults are far more willing to use alcohol-free and low alcohol drinks as a way of moderating their drinking than five years ago
- Frequent alcohol drinkers tend to consume these drinks in situations where they would normally consume alcohol but cannot or do not want to drink
