Helping create a safer night-time economy

Drinkaware Crew are trained venue employees who work in large clubs and venues to support the welfare of customers on a night out. Working in pairs, Crew mingle with customers to help promote a positive social atmosphere and provide assistance to those who may be vulnerable as a result of excessive drinking.

The Drinkaware Crew scheme was developed in response to insights from our Drunken Nights Out report through collaboration with the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner and the Nottinghamshire Crime and Drugs Partnership. The initial development work in Nottingham and Mansfield informed a further pilot, which ran from November 2015 to July 2016, in eight venues in South West England and an additional venue in Nottingham.

“Just seeing them reminds you that if you’re getting drunk,
what you’re doing isn’t really ok, in a way that’s a good thing”

This report presents our learning from the pilot, including the findings from the evaluation carried out by a team at Exeter University. In response to our learning we have further revised and improved the Drinkaware Crew scheme
