Drinkaware response to 2024 ONS alcohol-specific death statistics
Drinkaware CEO, Karen Tyrell responds to the publication of alcohol-specific deaths registered in the UK in 2024 by the Office for National Statistics.
“It’s encouraging to see a reduction in alcohol‑specific deaths this year. Any fall in these figures represents progress, but these numbers are still too high.
“Drinkaware’s research shows some positive shifts in drinking behaviour across the UK. Adults are drinking less frequently, consuming less when they do drink, and increasingly staying within the Chief Medical Officers’ low‑risk drinking guidelines of 14 units per week.
“However, one in five adults continue to drink above the guidelines – that's more than eight million people who may benefit from earlier support.
“Prevention has never been more important. By helping people make informed decisions about their drinking, and by offering trusted practical tools and support that many drinkers currently lack, Drinkaware is working to bridge this gap and in turn help to drive these numbers down even further.”
