Drinkaware's Dr John Larsen responds to Lancet Report on Global Alcohol Forecasts
Dr Larsen responds to today’s Lancet report on Global Alcohol Forecasts and notes that while average UK consumption has decreased it is still almost double the global average. He also gives advice on how to cut down on alcohol.
In response to the Lancet Report released today entitled: “Global alcohol exposure between 1990 and 2017 and forecasts until 2030: a modelling study”, Dr John Larsen, Drinkaware’s Director of Evidence and Impact said:
“This global study shows that while adult alcohol consumption has increased in low-and middle-income countries, it is still people in the better-off countries, particularly in Europe, who are drinking the most. While average UK consumption decreased from 12.3 litres in 2010 to 11.4 litres in 2017, this is still almost double the global average of 6.5 litres in 2017.
“Drinkaware data shows that in the UK, one in five adults and almost three in ten men drink over the weekly low risk drinking guidelines of 14 units, or around 6 pints of beer.1
“Drinkaware advises if you wish to cut down the amount you drink, a good way to achieve this is to consider having several drink free days a week.”
