Drinkaware respond to new alcohol harm survey
Drinkaware respond to new alcohol harm survey published in online journal BMJ Open.
Responding to a new survey published in the online journal BMJ Open, that reveals that one in five people in England have been harmed in some way by others’ drinking over the past year, Drinkaware Chief Executive Elaine Hindal said:
“This new England-wide survey highlights that alcohol harm can be far-reaching. Binge drinking can result in others being hurt, sometimes seriously, as well as causing acute harms to the person drinking. One in five experience some sort of harm as a result of other people’s drinking – that’s the same proportion as the number of UK adults regularly drinking over the low risk drinking guidelines (around 6 pints of beer a week).
“Low risk drinking guidelines set out that an individual should not regularly drink more than 14 units - or around 6 pints of beer - per week. They advise that people who drink this amount should spread their drinks over at least three days. A good way to try to cut back drinking is to have more drink free days.”
