How much is too much?

Recycling. You feel good when you do it, don't you? You're doing your bit to save the planet after all. But do you ever look at the wine and beer bottles you're putting out and wonder 'just how did we manage to get through all that since last week...?'.

Then you're not alone. Research shows that one in six people are concerned by the amount of alcohol they're drinking at home, based on the number of bottles and cans they recycle.

And that's what Drinkaware's campaign in October 2008 was all about.

It focused on the kind of drinking you probably don't even realise can damage your health.

You're not falling out of clubs and pubs in the small hours, fighting and throwing up, so why would you need to worry about your drinking? Especially when you eat well, go to the gym and generally look after yourself.

Because when you enjoy a glass of nice wine with a healthy dinner, it may well be part of a good Mediterranean diet. But when you enjoy three or four glasses you could be having a serious effect on your health.

Drinking at home is on the increase, especially among people in their mid 20s to 40s. Almost a quarter of women and more than a third of men are drinking more than  recommended in Government guidelines.

The campaign wasn't anti-drinking. It wasn't trying to shock or frighten anyone. Drinkaware launched the campaign because we wanted people to understand the effects alcohol can have on their health, and for them to take the time to think about how much they drink.
