What’s new in Version 2.1.0

Version 2.1.0. of the Drinkaware App is now available.   You can find it at the App Store or the Google Play Store.

We’ve spent the last few months updating the app to significantly improve performance. It’s now faster and more robust that it has ever been.

Whilst working on fixing the issues we have also made some other significant improvements. We have:

  • Updated the app to reflect the most up-to-date guidance on low-risk drinking
  • Included updated alerts for single session drinking in line with latest drinking  guidelines
  • Made improvements to the saving and synchronising of data
  • Fixed issues with achievement calculations
  • Delivered performance enhancements to the calendar

We would welcome your feedback about the app’s on-going performance so please don’t hesitate to contact us via digital@drinkaware.co.uk

I think some of my data is missing

When we launched version 2.0.0 in April 2016 we experienced issues particularly with users having problems synchronising data and a small number of users lost data.

As you will probably be aware, when we launched version 2.0.0 in April 2016 we experienced issues particularly with users having problems synchronising data and a small number of users lost data.

In most cases, these data loss issues have been resolved.  However, in a few instances, unfortunately some data cannot be recovered.  If you are one of those people who experienced data loss we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.

If you are an app user who believes they have lost data recorded prior to April 2016 you should use the data recovery tool which is built into the latest version of the app. For the majority of affected users this will successfully restore missing data to your phone. The data recovery button can be found in the ‘My Account’ section of the app, under the main menu.

If you are an app user who believes they are missing data recorded more recently than April 2016, or have any questions relating to missing data do please get in touch with us: digital@drinkaware.co.uk

Why are the colours on the calendar view now blue?

Previously the calendar view in the app attributed different colours (green, amber and red) to each day’s unit total; this was to highlight how a user’s drinking compared to the DAILY unit guidance (no more than 2-3 units per day for a woman and no more than 3-4 units per day for a man).

In January 2016 the UK’s Chief Medical Officers low-risk drinking guidelines were updated from daily advice to WEEKLY. To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, the official advice now is that it is safest for men and women not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis.

We can no longer attribute a traffic light (green, amber and red) as this would not accurately reflect the change to the official drinking advice.

The algorithm of the app does accurately attribute a low, increasing or higher risk in the Dashboard view over a 7 or 28 day period.

The change to the colour of the graphs was necessary to bring the app in-line with updated guidelines; however we do understand having a traffic light system is helpful to monitor your drinking 'at a glance'. We'll look to introduce a similar colour-coded system in the very near future.

Why do I need to create a user account?

Users told us they wanted to be able to track their drinking across several different devices or transfer to a new mobile phone therefore from 20 April 2016 all app users need to create a user account. Before this update you may have given us your email address so we could send you advice or information but this wasn’t creating an account.

How do I create an account?

You can find a step-by-step guide here: https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/blog/?p=255

Please make sure you have a good wi-fi connection when first updating your app to ensure that the data transfers smoothly.

Did you register more than one account?

If you registered more than one account for the app with different emails addresses please login using the account you used the most and would like to continue using.

If you cannot remember your password please reset by:

On the ‘Welcome! Please login’ screen > click 'forgot password' > an email will be sent to the email you put in > check your inbox > open the link we email you > enter ‘reset password’ > you should see 'password has been updated' > enter that email and password to log in to the App

What do you do with my data?

We will not pass your email address on to any 3rd parties – you won’t get any SPAM. Your data is secured following industry standards, which is the same technology that online banking and shopping websites and apps use; data security is important to us.

In order to make sure our app is effective, we have worked with research evaluation teams to look at user behaviour, but they never have access to the data directly – it’s always totally anonymised which means that individuals will not be identifiable from what the research team looks at.

We know that the tracking you do is highly personal, and there is comfort in anonymity so you can be totally honest with the app and yourself. Do check our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy for more details.

I’m having a problem logging in

If you’ve set up an account since 20th April (following the steps for account creation above) and are having problems getting in to your account, please get in touch with us: digital@drinkaware.co.uk.

It would be really useful if you could send a screengrab of where you’re getting stuck with an idea of your phone model and operating system version (which you can generally find in your phone settings, on a page called something like ‘About’).

Remember: this app login is not the same as your MyDrinkaware login – they are totally separate, and while we have plans to integrate them in the future, no data is currently passed between them.
