Surviving the festive season Snowballs, eggnog, mulled wine, brandy butter ... thank goodness Christmas comes but once a year. Follow these tips for a merry Christmas.

  • Pace yourself, with water or a soft drink after every alcoholic drink
  • Eat before you start drinking, or at least enjoy snacks or a meal with your drink
  • If you're going out in the car, decide beforehand who'll be "Des" - your designated non-drinking driver
  • Or plan a safe way to get home before you go, using public transport or licensed taxi companies
  • If you plan to do more than kiss under the mistletoe, carry a condom and practise safe sex
  • Too much Christmas spirit isn't always a good thing. Take plenty of booze breaks to help keep the peace
It's great to make New Year's resolutions, but it's even better to keep them realistic. So try "I'm going to stick to the daily guidelines for responsible drinking" rather than "I'm going to give up drinking for ever and ever."
