Reacting to a parliamentary question posed by James Brokenshire and answered by Gillian Merron which outlines the number of hospital admissions of patients under age 18 due to an alcohol-related condition, Chris Sorek, Chief Executive of alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware, says:

“Drinking so much that you require medical treatment is never a good thing, but it is especially worrying if people are under 18.  Not all young people drink, but those that do are drinking more and more often, often with drastic results.

“When young people end up in hospital because of alcohol it is very visible, however lots of young people who drink even moderate amounts can also be putting themselves at risk.  According to guidance from the Chief Medical Officer, all under-18s should ideally enjoy an alcohol free childhood.

“Even though the number of hospital admissions seems to be declining, there are still nearly 42,000 cases too many.  Children and young people need to know the facts about alcohol and parents are in a great position to give them that information. Parents can find tips and advice about talking to children about alcohol at www.drinkaware.co.uk.”
