Responding to research by Newsround on children’s reaction to parents drinking alcohol, Chris Sorek, Chief Executive of alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware, says:

“Drinking to excess is often deemed acceptable behaviour in British culture and parents might not think twice about the effect their alcohol consumption could be having on their children.

“Mums and dads play an important role in shaping their children’s attitudes and behaviour towards alcohol, with over half of young people listening to their parents about drinking.

“Educating children about alcohol misuse should be just as important as learning about drugs; unsafe sex or the danger of strangers and openly drinking to excess in front of young people sends the wrong messages.

“Drinkaware advises parents to be a positive role model by sticking within the recommended daily unit guidelines*. It’s also important to talk to children about alcohol and its effects as early as possible and ensure your child can talk freely with you about drinking.
