Responding to a statement from Cornwall Council following the confiscation of 369 bottles of parent provided alcohol from a group of 16-year olds on holiday in Newquay, Chris Sorek, Chief Executive of alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware, says:

“Lots of 16 and 17 year olds will want to mark the end of exams by celebrating with friends on a trip away, but if parents provide them with alcohol, it could inadvertently put them at risk. Drinking to excess can increase the chances of young people having unprotected sex, being involved in an accident or getting in trouble with the police, making it a summer to remember for all the wrong reasons.

“New Drinkaware research reveals that while almost a third (31%) of parents of 16 and 17 year olds say they have no idea what their child gets up to when drinking, 39% plan to provide alcohol for their child’s summer break with friends, putting them at significant risk.

“Mums and dads play a significant role in shaping their children’s attitudes and behaviour towards alcohol.  Rather than providing alcohol for their children to drink unsupervised, Drinkaware is encouraging parents to talk to their sons and daughters about the risks of excessive drinking before they go away on a summer break.”
