Reacting to research from Bupa which shows that more British people drink alcohol than any other country and are more likely to drink every day, Chris Sorek, Chief Executive of alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware, says:

“Regardless of how British drinking compares with other countries, the UK has an unhealthy drinking culture which needs to be tackled. Because so many people aren’t aware of the recommended daily unit guidelines* or how their own drinking compares, many end up drinking at levels that can put their long term health at risk.

“When it comes to thinking about our health, it’s all too easy to concentrate on the here and now instead of the long term - but the amount people drink today can have a direct impact on their future health, increasing their chances of stroke, some cancers, heart disease and liver damage.

“If people want to find out how much they’re drinking and tips for cutting down they can use the Drinkaware unit calculator and visit www.drinkaware.co.uk.”
