Responding to an article in the Lancet, written by Professor David Nutt, which labels alcohol the most harmful drug, Chris Sorek chief executive of alcohol awareness charity, Drinkaware, says:

“There is no doubt that alcohol misuse in the UK is extremely costly to both individuals and society, and needs to be urgently addressed.  But there is a risk that consumers may read these findings and assume they only refer to binge drinkers or alcoholics.  We know, though, that many people are regularly drinking above the daily unit guidelines at home or when out, and could be inadvertently putting themselves in harms way.*  It’s important they have the facts and advice on the effects of alcohol on their health and wellbeing so they can make informed decisions about their own drinking.

“Changing the UK’s drinking habits won’t happen overnight but if we take a partnership approach and address the root causes of why people drink to excess we can begin to change behaviour.  Consumers can visit the Drinkaware website for more information and to keep track of their drinking with our online drink diary- www.drinkaware.co.uk.”

  • *Drinkaware advise men to stay within the recommended guidelines of 3-4 units of alcohol per day (equivalent of a pint and a half of lager) and women to stay within 2-3 units per day (equivalent of a 175ml glass of wine).

  • Drinkaware provides consumers with information to make informed decisions about the effects of alcohol on their lives and lifestyles. Our public education programmes, grants, expert information, and resources help create awareness and effect positive change. An independent charity established in 2007, Drinkaware works alongside the medical profession, the alcohol industry and government to achieve its goals.  For further information visit www.drinkaware.co.uk.
