Drinkaware, the UK’s most recognised alcohol awareness charity, has appointed two public health experts to join the charity in its mission to tackle alcohol misuse.
Alan Maryon-Davis, former President of the Faculty of Public Health, has joined the Drinkaware Board of Trustees and will assist the team in mapping out the organisation’s strategic direction. Alan’s early career in hospital and general practice has been followed by a long commitment to public health. He has worked at the Health Education Council and previous roles include, Director of Public Health in Southwark, chair of the Royal Society for Public Health, founder of the National Heart Forum and member of the board of the Health Protection Agency. He is also a prolific writer and broadcaster on public health matters.
Jack Law, former Chief Executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland (AFS) has joined the Drinkaware staff team to strengthen links with the public health community and help ensure a collaborative approach to changing the nation’s drinking culture. Jack began his career in Social Services as a community worker with Strathclyde Regional Council, undertaking managerial posts until 2000. For the past 10 years as Chief Executive of AFS, Jack was involved in the Scottish Advisory Committee on Alcohol Problems, a member of the National Licensing Forum and a Board Member of International Council on Alcohol and Addictions.
Derek Lewis, Chairman of Drinkaware says: “We are delighted to welcome Alan and Jack to the Drinkaware team. Having public health experts both on the Board and as staff members will ensure Drinkaware continues to be a trusted source of information and advice for consumers.
“To change our drinking culture, it’s essential for the drinks industry, Drinkaware and the public health community to work together. The Drinkaware staff and Board teams are well positioned to ensure we can all play our part in changing consumer behaviour and minimising the harm caused by alcohol misuse.”
