Drinking alcohol increases the chances of young people taking risks, including with their sexual health, according to new research from alcohol charity Drinkaware and sexual health charity Brook. One in four (25%) 16 and 17 year olds had been drinking alcohol the first time they had sex without a condom and more than half (51%) have friends who have had sex without a condom because they were drunk (1).

Free pints to tackle binge drinking among young adults

Alcohol charity Drinkaware is today (1st September) unveiling a £100 million campaign to encourage 18-24 year olds to evaluate their drinking habits and in the long term, change the social acceptability of drunkenness. The campaign is launched alongside new research from Drinkaware which shows that one in three young adults (32%) claims they don’t need advice about alcohol(1). This is despite the fact that in the last twelve months, almost one in four (23%) have been ashamed of their appearance when drunk, 25% have not known how they got home, nearly one third (31%) have blacked out, one in 10 (9%) have been in a fight and just under half (48%) have vomited due to drinking too much.

British teenagers are turning to alcohol to relieve boredom according to a new survey launched today (5th August) by alcohol charity Drinkaware. Nearly one in 10 young people aged 16 and 17 (8 per cent) drink at least once a week simply because they are bored*. With the school summer holidays in full swing and half of teenagers (51 per cent) reporting they get bored in the holidays, Drinkaware is warning that drinking among young people is likely to increase.

People drink more in the summertime than they do at any other time of the year, according to new research by alcohol charity Drinkaware*. Encouraged by more opportunities to socialise outdoors and the seasonal increase in festivals and sporting events, one in four UK adults (24%) say they drink more during the summer, with only 10% naming wintertime as the season they consume the largest amount of alcohol.

One in four (25%) young people drink alcohol just for ‘something to do’ according to new research launched by alcohol charity Drinkaware*. Drinking alcohol ranks highest in preferred activities over playing sports, reading and going to the gym or pool and more than two thirds (71%) of 16-17 year olds drink once a week or more. The same survey also revealed that three fifths (59%) of professionals working with under-18s don’t have the support and information they need to provide education about alcohol.

Taking up the newly created role at the charity earlier this month, Professor Wallace will support Drinkaware’s mission to influence consumer behaviour by providing accurate information and facts about the effects of alcohol on people’s lives and lifestyles.
