After a very productive first year, all three streams of our grants programme have attracted an even greater volume of bids and enquiries.

Using evaluations submitted by 2009 recipients, we have developed a far keener sense of best practice regarding alcohol awareness raising on the frontline, particularly as a preventative measure among young people.

As a result, we have concentrated far more on projects offering intensive, face-to- face alcohol education, with fewer grants being awarded to generic outreach and peer mentoring projects.

In light of this slight shift, Drinkaware has awarded three Awareness Projects and one Big Impact Award, so far amounting to £126,312. Successful projects include:

  • Grants to the Pintsize Theatre Company for two separate tours on alcohol: one focussing on teenage pregnancy and the other on alcohol's influence on the lives of young adults
  • A second grant to 2XL for a reworked version of the initiative Drinkaware funded in 2009
  • A Big Impact Award to Scottish Sports Futures in Glasgow, bringing about an enhanced alcohol awareness component to their sport and healthy living programme for primary school children

As in 2009, success is gauged by the impact projects will have on beneficiaries' ability to retain facts, as well as the likelihood of strong legacies after the projects close. Wider replication in neighbouring areas or by other organisations remains vital, while the engagement of parents wherever possible has become a priority and will continue to be in the future.

All successful projects showed strong plans for monitoring and evaluation and built this into their work from the beginning. Projects receiving larger grants included elements of external evaluation by an independent party.
