Project: Peeve and Pals
Region: Tyne & Wear
Amount approved: £2,000
D2 is an independent youth organisation which tackles the needs of vulnerable young people living in one of the most disadvantaged estates in Newcastle.
The ‘Peeve and Pals’ project, the name derived from local slang for ‘drinking with friends’, aims to enhance young people’s understanding of alcohol and its effects and to combat the increasing level of unsafe sex due to dangerous drinking.
Young people will quiz their peers as to why they drink, where they do it, how often, how easily they acquire alcohol and how it makes them feel. D2 will provide further information on alcohol depending on precisely what arises from the first exercise, with the attendees being able to discuss what they have learned. This knowledge is further cemented by enrolment on an awareness building course regarding alcohol and sexual health. This pilot work will pave the way for future peer education projects in the area.
