Project: Drink Awareness
Region: Brandon - North East
Amount approved: £1,556
This community project provides educational and recreational activities, advice and support to a deprived rural community. They plan to target young people who are drinking in the streets and other public or out the way places using an unusually direct approach.
They will search out places where bottles, litter and debris evidence alcohol misuse, clear them up and then return at peak times (evenings and weekends) to undertake direct street work.
They will engage with the young people who congregate in the areas, provide alcohol awareness messages, support them into alternative activity at the community centre or elsewhere and change their behaviour to more responsible patterns. Plans are to enter the project in the local ‘Youth Work that Works’ award and, if the project shows successful outcomes, to utilise contacts and networks to disseminate the work and encourage its replication in neighbouring rural communities which are experiencing similar problems.
