A 'Fresher Perspective' blog: nights out shouldn't end like that...

Introduction

Sophie will be giving a frank portrayal of university life and the role alcohol plays in it. This week she witnesses an alcohol fuelled argument turn nasty.

So lately I’ve been getting a few comments that my behaviour is not a typical student's?  But what is a typical student?  Binge drinker?  This year I have definitely gone off the rails like most freshers yet luckily pulled myself together enough to remain on top of my degree.

I’m not sure what people want to hear from me, I go out and get drunk like ‘normal freshers’ and I’m frowned upon, when I have a sensible week I’m classed as boring.

To fulfil the needs of  those who want to read about binge drinking and utter chaos, I witnessed a ‘drunken brawl on Friday night… over a burger.  It was probably one of the most ridiculous reasons for the police to be called, chunks of hair and fast food being thrown about.

It seems like nowadays it’s not just men who become aggressive.  It appears that it has become perfectly normally to see women fighting men, in comparison to the ‘never hit a woman’ rule of the last generation.

The very same night a boy was taken away in an ambulance after collapsing outside of the club.  I assume this too was alcohol related.

Despite witnessing these incidents, I still ended up drinking too much a few days later at a Where's Wally? party.

I think my competitive streak doesn’t do me many favours as I try to keep up with the men. I found myself making bets to ‘down’ drinks the fastest. I’m surprised I was let into the last club, I have a knack of sobering in the queue to a reasonable level, then flopping back into an awful state once my hand has been stamped. I think I had a good night, it’s just really blurred to be honest. Next time I’m going for moderation.

Also last night driving home from work, I found a fully grown man in a suit slumped in the bushes, I was scared to stop, but in the end I rolled down the window to see if he was OK. He drunkenly sat up and told me to keep driving.

If it was a Friday or Saturday night I probably wouldn’t be as sympathetic, but last night was a Monday, I assume it was either alcoholism, drug abuse or depression? I hope he’s OK.

To be honest, sounds like you're on the right path when it comes to drinking at uni. Getting smashed on occasion, but still managing to do the work I have to is my plan come September. That guy in the bush must have been having an awesome time though.

My university was mostly international students, and they were completely in shock at how alcohol everyone drank and how much. Being in London, and surrounded by nights like 'Cheapskates', where the ONLY attraction is the cheap alcohol (and I mean really cheap). Once they were past the shock though, they joined right in.
