A 'Fresher Perspective' blog: music makes my night

Introduction

Sophie will be giving a frank portrayal of university life and the role alcohol plays in it. This week Sophie catches one of her favourite bands.

Ok so I’m writing this blog whilst moping.  It’s Saturday night and I’m indoors. Knowing that my parents are out at a party is making me feel like a little bit of a loser…

But before I condemn myself with the unsociable label… I am going to remind myself that I’ve had two spectacular nights out this week.  One unexpected, one anticipated.

Sunday began with a drive to the pub, eventually leading to a club.

I was so determined to drive home, I remained sober until about half 12. Eventually I became envious of the drunks. I have never been so aware of being sober, people were hitting it extra hard because of it being the weekend and there being a £2 drinks promotion.

I found myself feeling unbelievably self conscious, however, just by putting a drink in my hand (I hadn’t even sipped it) I dragged my friend to the dance floor.

With only three singles, I had just as good a time as I normally do. In fact…better.  I’m definitely looking forward to practicing my new found sensibilities again.

I thought I was fine to drive home, but my friends invited me to share a cab wit them. Despite my obvious dismay, I’m glad I didn’t put myself or anyone else at any risk.  At the time, the small amount of alcohol relaxed me to believe that for me to drive would seem perfectly acceptable.  I’m not sure how many units are legal but I’m glad I didn’t risk it.

Tuesday night, one of my favourite bands, Best Coast were playing at Madame JoJo’s in Soho. Extremely cheap, small venue, great atmosphere.

I continued with my sensible drinking once again… more than Sunday… yet pacing myself rather nicely.  The friend I was with has got into the habit of taking my drinks from me for a short period to slow me down.  I’m a naturally fast eater/drinker and I’m lucky that he monitors me. The atmosphere at the gig was nice, not crazy or stupidly drunk, just fun and sociable, a nice change.

Plenty more gigs/festivals lined up over the next few months, I have a feeling this is going to be one of the best summers I’ve ever had.

This is not Fresher behaviour.

Yeah, this is really not typical student behaviour, you've picked the one person out of every 200 students that drinks in moderation

This definately does not portray the typical student living away from home! I think you need to re-evaluate your example to give a true picture, this will not have any impact in making students more aware of there drinking habits as it is not a true reflection!

Not typical student behaviour, but how it should be - there are a lot of us who drink in moderation, the drunks just don't notice because they're too busy making twats of themselves in front of everyone and kissing the floor every night

pipe down lincoln uni, you dont need to drink to be interesting, are you really so boring that the only thing that makes you appealing to other people is when your drunk, Nice one! In my fresher year it was 3 nights out a week standard, but a bit more chilled now in the 2nd year. I'm under the distinct impression that this "blog" is here just to promote sensible drinking, an account of; I'm a student I drank best part of a bottle of vodka blacked out at 2a.m. then woke up in the garden at 11a.m. not know what happened, probably wouldnt have a place in such a website.

this is a frank portrayal of student life? really? I am a second year student and everybody I know would say that amount of drinking is a really quiet week - maybe if you have a lot of work on and need to go out just once to catch up or socialise.

Heres a realistic story Monday £1 a pint, got smashed Tuesday, Recovered with hair of the dog Wednesday, Played sport, drank on the coach on the way back, went out on a big social got smashed. Thursday, 75p a drink Fri felt rough Sat £1 a pint got smashed Sun, Quiznight, few beers during the quiz, won a crate of VK got smashed.

Think the time of the smashed student (apart from Farquad with his king size wallet) is almost over, with drinks becomin way too expensive for the less financially well off (altho where on earth are you getting 75p a drink? Blinding. Might have to travel for a night out where you are). Altho a campaign like this is almost pointless, nobody will be able to afford to go to uni soon anyway.

This is more like 2nd/3rd year perspective! As a Fresher it's all about using up that loan on pound a pints. I'm sure Sophie gets bladdered like the rest of us but had to tone it down for this site. We'd get the truth if she came home hammered and then wrote the blog ha

this is absolutely nothing like a normal freshers, most of wich i cant remember. on a normal night out me and my friends (and we are faaaaaar from the worst) always get exceedingly drunk, a "light night" being only 10 or 12 units (usually in the form of trebles, and a more standard night will be about 20 plus units. on my 19th birthday i got above 40 units (briefly, before it left my system again :))

I'm a student (2nd year just finished) and I don't drink at all! *shock, horror!* and guess what... I have plenty of money, great grades, great friends, great social life, all without alcohol!
