Sophie will be giving a frank portrayal of university life and the role alcohol plays in it. This week she enjoys a sober night by the sea and another not so sober one at a charity bash.
I’ve been having party withdrawal symptoms.
Protesting against the fact that I had to be up the next day, I drove to a friend’s reaching his house gone 1am, already knowing that it would be difficult to be let in anywhere.
Spontaneous stupidity led us down to Southend-on-Sea…to sit on the beach like freezing melons. Luckily, to our delight, we stumbled across Westcliff casino.
Sitting in the empty bar, sipping coke, alcohol didn’t even cross my mind. Got kicked out at six, just in time for MacDonald’s breakfast, over tired yet chirpy.
Nights like this are a great reminder that alcohol doesn’t have to be the central point of my social life. I actually took great pleasure in being able to talk sense rather than the mindless gabble that comes out at the pub.
It’s frustrating in someway that I’ve moved back home, because when I was living with my housemates I would have been able to have friends around to chill out at mine. Back at home with the parents is smaller and more invasive. Having your own place offers a lot more non-alcoholic opportunities, but perhaps not a casino?!
Saturday is a complete juxtaposition to Thursday and probably makes me sound like a hypocrite after my alcohol free protest in the paragraph above….
The night began with good intentions, to raise money in aid of Parkinsons disease. Balloons, raffles, cake and alcohol. After the events a friend and I decided to carry on and go to a club.
After the long walk home, we fell asleep on the tiles in my kitchen, until I was woken up with the nauseous reminder that I had drunk to much… I then retired to the sofa. To be honest much of it has escaped my memory and I woke up in the morning with my face painted as a tiger.
