A 'Fresher Perspective' blog: a sobering sight

Introduction

Sophie will be giving a frank portrayal of university life and the role alcohol plays in it. This week Sophie has busy week on the social front but has the misfortune of seeing the aftermath of a drink driving accident.

I had the most blissful, beautiful, well deserved 12 hours of sleep. Don’t you just love those nights?

I’ve become addicted to being out. All that’s ever on my mind nowadays is… hurry up Thursday, Friday, Saturday. This is probably because being single now has freed up a lot of time that needs to be filled…

Monday night was my friend James’ birthday, most of us decided to drive… the birthday boy on the other hand vomited on the carpet of the bar. This is most likely to a potent cocktail that was fed to him. Perhaps not the most thoughtful birthday present?!

Thursday, quiet one at the pub…escalated to the whole night.

I’ve got into a terrible habit of taking my debit card to the pub, you cant literally see the money… so there are no hesitations spending it.

Walking home we came across a blockade of police and ambulances, a drunk driver had crashed, leaving the passenger unconscious. Reality definitely hit home here.

Friday, oh dear. Women will understand this one: Hold ups that don’t hold up. Alcohol and hold ups that don’t hold up. Dress that likes to roll up.

Embarrassment doesn’t occur till the next day.

Saturday, I thought I’d be sensible and drive instead of drinking. I was in the pub for about an hour, got in the mood and dropped my car back home before heading back.

At the end of the night a few of us decided to stay at Courtney’s. Not realising that her nieces were staying over, the spare rooms were taken up, resulting in a four in the bed situation. Super Mario, Takeshi’s castle and insomnia.

I think it's important for people to be aware of drinking but some people just give students a bad name. Not all students want to drink themselves stupid every night: I drink during the week maybe once or twice a fortnight and even then would only have 1-2 glasses of wine. I drink far more frequently at home than I do at university and I think that some students need to look at their priorities and quite why they are at university at all. If it is just to get drunk all the time, it's a pretty expensive way of doing it.

Hi Sophie, im interested to find out how well you do at uni and how many hours you work a week? With uni, studying, reading and working 14 hours a week I dont have time to go out up to 3 nights a week. If I went out this much my uni work would seriously suffer and I would be going to uni hungover a lot of the time. Good for you if you can juggle a hectic social life with working and getting good grades at uni but I certainly can't.

Jim, clearly you didn't go to uni. So just to let you know the majority of us don't doss around and live off taxpayers money to fund our pub fun and immense alcohol quantities. Some of us manage to juggle lectures, uni work and another job just so we can afford to go out and have a bit of fun instead of spending ALL our money on rent, bills, food and books. Also, at the end of it, hopefully will leave with a pretty decent job or some experience that can lead us somewhere in our lives. I'm not saying university is for everyone, and there's nothing wrong with not going, but it certainly isn't an excuse to get pissed every night and spend tax money.
