What goes on tour doesn’t always stay on tour

Introduction

Five holiday souvenirs you won’t want to take home.

Feeling the burn?

Planning on rocking the lobster look this summer? Sinking a few afternoon beers may mean you add extreme sunburn to your hangover symptoms when you wake up. Great news if you like the smell of after-sun lotion and don’t fancy sitting down any time soon! Not so good if you were planning on leaving the shade of your hotel room for the rest of the holiday.

Top tip: A couple of drinks on the beach could leave you sizzling in the sun if you doze off  – so give the booze a miss when the sun’s out in full force. Let your mates know if they’re starting to burn and make sure they’re looking out for you too. Slipping extra sun cream in your beach bag is a smart idea too.

Picked up some new friends?

Feeling itchy down below? Hopefully it’s just the not-quite-dry pair of pants you threw in your suitcase two seconds before leaving home. However, if it’s a result of that drunken one night stand, you might end up having to learn the Spanish for ‘painful discharge’...

Top tip: Always carry condoms to make sure alcohol doesn’t come between you and safe sex if you decide to drink.

Too flash with your cash?

Remember the busy beach bar last night? After a couple of cocktails you lost more than your inhibitions and now your cash and plastic seem to have disappeared. Looks like you’ll have to ask your mates to borrow some money while you call home to get your cards cancelled.

Top tip: If you decide to drink, eating before you head out and setting yourself a sensible drinking  limit*  is a great way to stay on form so you can keep track of your stuff and spot any risky situations before it’s too late.

Had a good break?

Breaking your leg is proof that dancing on tables after you’ve had a drink isn’t a great idea. And while your mates will be happy to sign your plaster cast, they’ll soon be off to the beach while you’re left staring at the hospital walls. Well, at least you can catch up on writing your postcards home...

Top tip: Drinking and dancing on tables is a dangerous move, so stick to soft drinks or keep the alcohol to a minimum* if you’re planning to dance the night away.

Having a knockout time?

You and your mates might have been all smiles during the flight out, but that massive argument in the middle of the beach bar soon subdued your holiday mood. So what was it all about? To be honest no-one can remember, but you can’t stay grumpy with each other all holiday… can you?

Top tip: Alcohol can make you feel more aggressive, so if your mates are getting argumentative, stepin calmly and try to sort it out. Steer them away from drinking any more alcohol, and think about getting them some water or a soft drink while they calm down.

*The recommended daily limit is no more than 4 units on any one day for men and no more than 3 units on any day for women. A shot of vodka is 1 unit. A pint of 5% lager is 3 units. A standard 175ml glass of 13% white wine is 2.3 units.
