It was Tuesday so it must have been Newcastle! The team had to be up bright and early to get on the mini-bus and head ‘doon Toon’ (i.e. to Newcastle).
We had a great time in Glasgow and were made to feel very welcome by our Scottish hosts, but if there’s one thing that we all noticed, it was the lack of World Cup fever in what is a football-mad city.
If you’re desperate to avoid all the hullabaloo around the ‘greatest show on earth’, then you might want to spend the next month north of the border! Understandable because we’re sure that England would be the same if they had missed out on qualification, but a bit of a culture shock none-the-less.
Normal service was restored for our crew of Englishmen (and women!) when we crossed over Hadrian’s Wall into England where World Cup excitement is reaching fever pitch.
No sooner had we arrived in Newcastle for the latest leg of the Hoof it! Tour than the freestyle boys had commandeered the bus (with our ever-accommodating driver Dimitri) for a trip to the North East’s most iconic landmark – the Angel of the North. The boys managed to get exclusive access to the site to have a bit of a kickabout with the angel and completed some seemingly impossible stunts with Anthony Gormley’s landmark. We’ll have the full clip on the site later this week.
The evening saw day two of the tour at the North Shields Powerleague, with our local football hero, John Beresford, in attendance. The local fans were thrilled to meet ‘Bez’, who played for Newcastle in the 1990’s and hundreds scooped their free Drinkaware football, whilst chatting to John about his illustrious playing career.
The evening also saw a classic World Cup-themed ‘battle’ between the freestylers with them re-enacting England’s World Cup group C games against opponents USA, Algeria and Slovenia. You can see the clips ahead of each England group game right here on the Hoof it! site.
And that was Newcastle, after which the team got a quick bite and then straight to bed, ahead of ‘Wild Wednesday’ which will see us take in both Leeds and Manchester…phew!
