If you’re planning on playing host to a World Cup party, or eating at home before you head out to watch a match with friends, why not cater with a true international flavour?
Whether you’re firing up the BBQ or cooking in the kitchen, not only will your guests love your imaginative menu but eating is particularly important if you’re drinking. Food slows the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream, meaning it doesn’t go to your head so quickly.
Check out these eight simple food ideas - one traditional dish for each group in the tournament. Don't let the fact some of the countries might have already been knocked out stop you from rustling up these delicious dishes!
Group A - South Africa: Lamb Bobotie Where better to start than one of the traditional dishes of the host nation? For an authentic taste of South Africa, Lamb Bobotie is a delicious curried casserole dish with a sweet fruity twist.
Group B – Greece: Spinach and Cheese Pie Whilst Hollywood would have us believe that Greeks are strictly carnivorous creatures, this delicious dish is a veritable vegetarian delight. Made with spinach, feta, dill, spring onions and filo pastry, it’s sure to go down a treat, even with the meat-lovers.
Group C – USA: Philly Cheese steak Throw a steak on the barbeque to create this cheesy American taste sensation. Just make sure you have a surplus of napkins if you don’t want grease on your floor!
Group D – Ghana: Spicy Fish Stew This fish, tomato and paprika stew takes only 15 minutes out of your day to prepare and is one of the more healthy options on the global menu. Use chicken if you don’t fancy fish.
Group E – Japan: Tempura Japan certainly has plenty more to offer than just sushi. Tempura - battered prawns and vegetables – will make a great snack for your guests. In Japan they commonly batter plants found in their back garden but this is not advised in the UK!
Group F – Italy: Tomato and Mozzarella Calzone Reigning World Cup champions, the Italians are also world leaders in the culinary stakes. An Italian classic, this home-made dish is easy to do at home and way better than any pizza delivery service.
Group G – Brazil: Feijoada A national dish of five times World Cup winners Brazil, this beef and black bean dish may not look great, but it more than makes up for it in the taste department.
Group H – Spain: Patatas Bravas The potatoes are just boiled and fried, but it’s the bravas sauce, a mildy spicy salsa, that makes this dish so special. If you prefer, make a ton of this sauce then just pour it over (almost) anything edible.
