Watching an England game accompanied by food and drink is a footballing tradition as established as hearing ‘at the end of the day’ in a post-match interview or (heaven forbid) England finding themselves in another penalty shoot-out in the knockout stages. But in our enthusiasm to cheer on Fabio and the boys, it can be quite easy to overdo it without realising and ending up missing crucial moments in the match.

By following a simple gameplan, devised by Drinkaware, it’s easy to make sure you can go the distance this year (regardless of how far England get in South Africa):

Make a substitution

Think about swapping some alcoholic drinks for soft ones during the game or a glass of water so that you make the final whistle.

Pace yourself

By slowing down what you drink (and watching your limits) you are giving your body a chance to catch up. Your liver can only process about one unit of alcohol an hour (equivalent to less than half a pint of beer or less than one small glass of wine) meaning that when you drink fast, the concentration of alcohol in your bloodstream shoots up.

Eating’s not cheating

Food slows the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream, meaning it doesn’t go to your head so quickly. Making it part of your gameplan to eat before and during the game is a good way to ensure you’re sharp right up until the final whistle.
