The Hoof It! team woke up to pouring rain in Newcastle but it didn’t dampen our spirits. With two freestyle shows today, we had fire (and a hearty breakfast) in our bellies as we packed up cameras, ball pumps, suitcases and of course footballs into the minibus.
Once freestyler John had done his hair – it gets very messy doing headstands with a football between your legs – we left the north-east on our way to Leeds.
A few hours later and it was still raining as we made our first stop of the day at ASDA House. Our Freestyle footballers John, Francis and Craig wowed head office staff with their tricks, which meant the Hoof It! balls were in high demand.
Former UK freestyle champion John taught a group of enthusiastic ASDA staff ‘The Neck Stall’ – that’s catching the ball on the back of your neck to you and me.
John said: “They tried hard and listened well. I think we could have unearthed at least one budding freestyler here today!”
We said goodbye to our friendly bus driver Dmitiri in Leeds as Mario arrived to take his place for the rest of the week. A quick lunch from the ASDA canteen and we set off across the misty Pennines to Manchester.
Just minutes from The Theatre of Dreams, the evening’s entertainment took place at the Powerleague Trafford Soccerdome – the largest 5-a-side football centre in the world no less! With 19 pitches packed out throughout the evening, we were in for a very busy night as we set up in the foyer, helped by the very accommodating Powerleague staff.
Perfectly at home in Trafford, today’s local legend was former Manchester United defender, David May. Used to being part of a talented team, he had a kickabout with the freestylers before MC Ashley blew the event’s starting whistle.
We gave away hundreds of Drinkaware balls, as ‘David May, Superstar’ met fans and our freestyle three did their stuff. Despite the charms of our promo girls, we noted the suspicious nature of five-asiders in Manchester. “A free ball? What’s the catch?” they said.
But it was our biggest event yet. Half way through the tour and it’s really flying by. With England’s first game just three days away, World Cup fever is definitely in the air. Whether they be blue or red, fans in Manchester most definitely have the three lions on their shirt. Oh, and it’s still raining…!
Next stop, Birmingham.
