Sophie will be posting her thoughts and experiences of uni every week during her first year to give a frank portrayal of university life and the role alcohol plays in it. This week she's back in Nottingham visiting her boyfriend and checking out the clubs.
It seems like at the moment I’m on a steady stroll uphill…not only am I feeling much happier about living in London, but I just came back from a fantastic weekend in Nottingham!
I think my fortnightly visit to the midlands will become my main socialising and alcohol consumption events. After the last Nottingham parking disaster, I travelled down on the train, which in comparison to driving, was sheer bliss.
I arrived Thursday night, 10 minutes before the countdown to my boyfriend’s birthday, and just in time to see someone throw up in the sink.
I then immediately whacked on some heels and walked down to Gatecrasher! It was a fantastic night despite only having two drinks. However, for some reason I was unable to finish my second one and had to give it away. I was really tired after the journey so we didn’t stay till the end but it was a brilliant start to the weekend.
Friday night was another big night out. I think I owe someone some cornflakes. The girls and I were eating them straight from the box in the flat next door to sober a little before heading to the club. Sorry to whoever woke up with no breakfast!
I couldn’t finish the 200ml bottle of vodka I’d bought, I felt like I’d drunk enough for the night and found no need to purchase any drinks in EQ.
Friday was definitely the highlight. It felt like it had been a while since I’d proper let myself go. However, due to my boyfriend’s overwhelming birthday unit intake, the night did end in an argument. I can laugh now, but it all seemed so serious at the time. All because I was wearing lipstick and didn’t want to kiss him and smudge it!
But it has a happy ending because everything was resolved once it was out of our system and we had a relaxing weekend after that.

Hello, really enjoying your blog. Your relatively modest alcohol consumption makes me extremely alarmed about my own, and that of my contemporaries! I'm in my third year at Goldsmiths and during my time here nearly everyone I've encountered seems to have an immense fondness for "K Cider" (£1 a can and 8.4%, if you've never come across it!). I dread to think of the number of cans of this -or, for that matter, centiletres of Glen's Vodka, another good value but unpleasant favourite - that are consumed in the halls and student houses and warehouses of New Cross and the surrounding area over an average weekend. It's all very counter-productive and silly...
