A 'Fresher Perspective' blog: is the amount I drink normal?

Introduction

Sophie will be giving a frank portrayal of university life and the role alcohol plays in it. This week she begins to question whether she's drinking too much compared to other students.

Ok, so once again I lost control.

I’m quite horrified about it.  Because I’m forced to reflect on it, I’m beginning to get quite concerned.

I literally cannot remember my Friday night.

I woke up to angry text messages from one friend, a phone number which I don’t remember and a very sore head.

Despite the fact that I’d made a complete tit of myself…. Off I went and did it all again the next night.

I don’t know why I wanted to. I was drinking doubles like they were going out of fashion. The two friends I was with were sipping their cider fairly slowly, so really not sure why I felt the need to drink so much.

I did have a good time but there was a point in the night where I had to wait for the room to stop spinning before I could carry on dancing.

I’ve noticed that my alcohol tolerance has raised dramatically, I used to be perfectly happy having two or three drinks, lately this has escalated to six or seven doubles. I am completely aware that I need to calm down,  especially as I’m drinking this much twice a week. Are other students doing this? I want to screw my sensible cap back on.

Yet despite all of this… I know I’m out tonight and will probably do it all again.  Hopefully I will remember I’m a writing a blog for Drinkaware and take a more sensible approach, especially as I’m getting the train to Birmingham early tomorrow morning.

I don't think people should do this. If they know its ruining their life why do they do this?

I used to drink a lot but ive stopped now because i used my will power. My boyfriend supported me through the difficult times so i recommend you try and get someone to help you.

Well I think the majority of students drink at least as much as you if not more. I am a student and last night I started the night off with half a litre of vodka then hit the club, Ive lost the keys to my room, have a massive deep cut down my arm and the cops turned up at our flat but its all in the name of banter

Share your pre drink with someone, so you drink less, such as a bottle of wine or 1/4 litre of spirits. Then...don't take any money out with you so you won't buy anymore. If you're a happy person then why would you need to get so drunk to the point you don't remember a thing...merry is the way to go. I live in halls where its not just copious amounts of alcohol, but a stupid amount of narcotics too, and phychadelics a lot of the time so your really not the only one. I just stand back and think its not for me, sometimes though, a high tolerance is a good thing.

I'm a first year student and although i have the odd wasted night out, i don't feel under any pressure to drink heavily from my peers. by the sounds of it, you don't seem to either, so i would have to suggest that what you have is a personal problem and not one that affects students in general. i would suggest seeing a councillor as you may be becoming dependent on alcohol to suppress other sources of distress in your life. Learn to say no!

Everyone makes mistakes...i've drunk loads and nearly lost a lot of my friends from it! You just need to keep looking at what you're doing to yourself and others...otherwise there won't be any others to go out with!

I'm ok to say I drink a lot. For a girl my tolerance is pretty high - I usually drink 6-8 cans of beer before going out then hit the doubles. BUT i've never forgotten an entire night! Usually there's conversations I remember having, but not what I said but that's just banter. Even at this point I can still think completely soberly when needed if something's going wrong or we need to get home. I'm now 20 and the last time I threw up was my 18th birthday. Personally I like the drinks I drink, like beer/wine/mixers with dinner etc so I dont just drink to get drunk, but wasted nights out are pretty damn funny :) Just know your limits that's all

I reckon sophie isn't writing this blog to receive patronising advice. She has been asked to provide her perspective on being a fresher and is doing that well, everyone has a different experience but i can definitely relate to it so i think its an accurate portrayal.

ok. i understand your problem. but if you wanna have a good life, stop. if you wanna have fun, i recommend you go to apartment parties better. i mean, you can drink, smoke weed, do whatever and even sleep there. so yea. house parties ftw. but clubs and bars? ew. dirty old men EVERYWHERE. Will power. it works. if you have no other option, chain yourself to a pole or your bed so that you cant get out. there. your problem solved. hope it works!
