A 'Fresher Perspective' blog: New course, new uni

Introduction

In her final blog piece, Sophie looks back at what she’s learnt from her first year at uni and looks ahead to the new course she’s starting in September. We’ll miss you Sophie!

It’s sad to say this is the last time that I will publicly announce my hangover.

There’s no doubt about it, being a fresher definitely trebled my annual alcohol intake. I would say that maybe my second year will be calmer, however, I am in fact becoming a fresher all over again.

This year I’ve decided to change my course to a media orientated degree, feeling I no longer hold a passion for my current fine art one.

I’m moving up to Birmingham and staying in halls, which is the uni experience I wanted all along.

This year has not been a waste, it’s given me time to think about what I want to achieve and I feel I’ve had time to mature.  I just hope my ability to control my alcohol intake matures soon - it seems to have progressively got worse.

For example: a recent 21st birthday resulting in me crashing out fairly early in the evening.

I know my problem is that I drink too fast.  I’m a broken record, religiously stating how I’m going to be sensible at the beginning of the evening.  Within an hour I find myself drinking spirits like water.

I always regret it, not because of the hangover but my recent habit of simply forgetting everything.  I much prefer being able to think back knowing I had a great evening, rather piecing a few elements together and hoping I haven’t lost all dignity.

This Friday was once again no exception after four bottles of free champagne were placed on our table at Babble Bar in London.

I have no idea of the name of the club we headed to afterwards, another indication that I was more than just a little drunk.

I do have a memory of buying three drinks which cost me £31, but what with being intoxicated, the price didn’t seem to phase me.

Goals for my repeat of 1st year:

  • Have an even better freshers week than last year (although ministry of sound and koko for freshers is pretty tough competition)
  • Learn to control myself and slow down when drinking.
  • Budget, budget, budget. This year will be tighter than ever.
  • To keep in contact with my friends at home and from my first year in London.
  • To dive into my course and enjoy it.
  • To hold on to my Essex accent and avoid coming home with a Brummie one!

I have a good feeling about the year ahead.  Fingers crossed.

Everyone goes through freshers. Learn to do it well. Drinking prior to uni gives you perspective and even though I'm now dependant on alcohol - make sure you put the time in. Every session of drinking equals an allnighter working. Its how I'm on a masters... Drink safe towards your degree and final goals in life.
