A 'Fresher Perspective' blog: what's the alternative to the pub when the weather's bad?

Introduction

Sophie will be giving a frank portrayal of university life and the role alcohol plays in it. This week she blames the great British weather on a daytime visit to the pub.

After committing myself to cutting down on alcohol… I once again found myself unable to resist temptation.  If the weather was nicer we probably wouldn’t have drank at all, however, the rain led us to take refuge in a pub in Soho. I initially stated that I wouldn’t drink but sitting with a person who is…can make you feel… well… a bit boring. I need to build up my stamina and stick to my word!

I found myself trying various concoctions followed by warm amaretto coffees.  In the back of my head I was trying to remind myself how much money I was spending, but alcohol led to just not caring. Unlike my normal hyperactive self, I found myself just wanting to fall asleep.

Thursday was spent at a gig followed by a club, after drinking a couple of vodkas, I still really wasn’t in the mood and decided to leave early.

I tend to go through phases where there is a dip in my social life and I feel no need to ‘party’. At the moment I’ve just been enjoying one to one days rather than big nights out.

The weekend in itself was different, Saturday afternoon I met my family who were camping in Norfolk, so I spent the Easter weekend in wellies and cycling down the Norfolk Broads. I’m not usually one for camping as I do like my luxuries, luckily the campsite had electricity. I am yet to figure out how I’m going to survive Reading festival this year!

If you can't stick to your word, try sticking to one drink rather than concotions! Like wine spritzers, they're nice and adding the soda water makes them longer and weaker. Banning yourself from alcohol clearly isn't working with your mentality, what's wrong with a more relaxed view?! I have a glass of something every day with dinner - not to get drunk but because I like the taste! This helps you know your limits and stops you doing stupid stuff when out, without having to "resist temptation"

Try getting a sociable student writing for you, one with a half decent social life and you will get quite a different blog!!!

I agree with Sean. Great idea for a blog, but it seems you've got the wrong person for the job. I'm a student and I'm drunk every day without fail..

I go out get really drunk and give all students a bad name. I calm down for a week and suddenly i'm boring Sean and Kev, if you are looking for a stereotypical student you should read through my archives before making judgements

This view (with my UNI experience in mind) is actually a very honest representation of how when you are young and a student, almost any situation you find yourself in, you can wake up, fully clothed, in your bed and just saying to yourself... "What happened last night..." For all you people commenting negatively, this is the "normal" student experience. This is what I and millions of others are going through right now. Alcohol, as the blog states leads you to not care, and I can vouch for that. So if you are trying to cut down during UNI "Which I have... Several times... All unsuccesfully" One drink cuts your inhibitions and leads to several drinks... Which leads to pissed. Cutting down doesn't work. I don't claim to practise what I'm preaching. I'm just the average point of view.

Man, I miss getting wasted... I am a third year already, doing sciences and... well... It's kinda hard getting pissed when you've got all the deadlines etc. Being a fresher though was exactly as described: loads of drinking (pretty much every day) and one club night after another with just short pit stops around Xmas and Easter... I know that you humanities students can go on getting wasted throughout exam period as well... That's not our blessing though.

I'm a finalist and I've managed to balance some great nights out with getting a good degree (so far anyway!) and having a part time job. I love partying and I enjoy drinking, but in my first year my friend died of alcohol poisoning after a heavy night drinking. Those of you who boast about how much you drink or who think that people who take it easy are 'boring' - you clearly have no perception of how pathetic you sound. There's absolutely nothing wrong with slowing down occasionally, and if you don't, you could be in serious trouble. However much banter there is on a good night out will not compensate for what a total arse you'll feel when all your mates have graduated and got good jobs and your stuck in the pub at home, drowning your sorrows and dribbling down your beer bellies. Nice one Sophie - nothing beats a good amaretto coffee :)

Liquid lunch and dinners are something to be proud of? Don't see how getting wasted every night, acting like a dick and forgetting everything that happened is exciting, while taking it easy and relaxing with a drink and having a laugh with friends that you can actually enjoy and REMEMBER enjoying is boring. But if blowing your loan on alcohol, sleeping til lunchtime and spending the rest of the day with a sick stomach and a thumping headache is your idea of fun, make the most of it while you can. You're gonna have to make an effort to get some work done sooner or later. The point of going to uni is to get a degree, right? Can't see that happening if you're 'drunk every day without fail'...

I think Sophie represents the student population well. I don't drink often and when I do, it will be a few in a pub catching up with friends. Sophie represents my uni experience as well as the people that go out and get hammered everyday. And I wouldn't consider a social life, getting so drunk you can't remember anything and waking up pennyless. Witty banter with some good mates seems more of a social life than strangers with half their drink down them slurring rubbish at you.
