Derek Lewis - Chairman
Derek joined the board of The Drinkaware Trust as Chairman at the beginning of 2009. Among his other activities he is Chairman of JHP Group, a major provider of vocational training and employability services; a Director of Protocol Associates, a leading provider of services to schools and colleges in the UK; and a Trustee of WRVS, a charity which delivers practical support to older people. His business career began with Ford Motor Company in the UK, Germany and the USA, followed by the Imperial Group, before joining Granada Group as Finance Director and later as Chief Executive. Having been closely involved in the launch of satellite television in the UK, he led the team that created UK Gold Television, becoming Non-Executive Chairman. He was then appointed as Director-General of the Prison Service in England and Wales in 1993 and Principal Policy Adviser on prisons to the Home Secretary. Following the Prison Service, he worked with the cable television industry on the launch of digital services and was subsequently Chairman of Sunsail International plc and Patientline plc.
Nick Grant - Treasurer
In addition to leading the Sainsbury’s legal team, Nick plays an industry role as Chair of the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group (RASG). RASG was set up by leading retailers in 2005 to spread best practice in preventing the sale of alcohol to under 18s. The group has succeeded in spreading the Think 21 approach to compliance across the retail sector and has pioneered community based approaches to youth alcohol issues. Nick is also the BRC representative on the EU Task Force on Youth Aspects of Alcohol.
Carolyn Bradley - UK Marketing Director, Tesco
Carolyn joined Tesco as a Graduate Trainee from Clare College, Cambridge, in 1986. She spent a number of years in various commercial departments, first in Fresh Foods and then Value Added Foods, which included Beers Wines & Spirits. She has also worked for Tesco in France, and was the Chief Operating Officer for Tesco.com. Since August 2008, Carolyn has been Tesco’s UK Marketing Director, overseeing Brand Communications, Advertising, Trade Planning, Customer Insight, Local Marketing, Price, Promotions and Clubcard. In addition to being a trustee for Drinkaware, Carolyn also sits on the ISBA Council, the body representing advertisers.
Professor David Foxcroft, School of Health and Social Care, Oxford Brookes University
A chartered psychologist and prevention scientist with expertise in the prevention of alcohol misuse, David has advised the British Government and the World Health Organisation on alcohol misuse prevention for young people.
Helen Humphreys – Director, Acorn Communication Consultancy Ltd
Helen is an experienced consultant in reputation and issues management, and has managed major change programmes for large organisations. She coaches and mentors senior executives and advises communication teams on working effectively. Helen is a school governor and a previous trustee of the One Stop Shop for School Governors.
Mark Hunter - Chief Executive Officer, Molson Coors Brewing Company (UK) Limited
Mark took up his current position of CEO at Molson Coors with responsibility for the UK & Ireland in December 2007. Prior to this he worked in Canada as Chief Commercial Officer at Molson following the Molson/Coors merger and has been with the Company since 1989. Mark is also Vice Chairman and a Board Director of the British Beer & Pub Association, a member of the Portman Group Council and President of the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers. Mark also holds an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Strathclyde.
Dr Nick Sheron - Head of Clinical Hepatology, Southampton General Hospital
Nick has been consultant physician in liver disease since 1993. He also runs an active clinically based research programme at the University of Southampton, in the area of alcohol-related problems.
Benet Slay, Managing Director, DIAGEO Northern Europe
Diageo is the world's leading premium drinks business. Benet has an extensive commercial background in consumer goods both in GB and abroad, has been MD for Diageo GB including being a council member of the Portman Group and the British Beer and Pub Association, and is now responsible for Diageo's Northern Europe business.
Ted Tuppen CBE - Chief Executive, Enterprise Inns
Ted has been in his current role at Enterprise Inns since its formation in 1991. He is a chartered accountant and was in practice until 1980 with KPMG in London, North America and Europe. He gained a masters degree in Business from the Cranfield School of Management before becoming Managing Director of a privately owned international engineering company, where he worked until 1989. Ted has also worked in, and acted as a Consultant, to a variety of businesses. He is Vice President, and former Chairman of the British Beer and Pub Association and was awarded a CBE in the 2006 New Years Honours List for his contribution to the hospitality industry.
Gill Valentine - Professor of Geography, University of Leeds
Gill’s research interests include consumption, social identities and childhood, parenting and family life. She has completed two research projects about alcohol consumption in the UK for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation: Drinking Places: where people drink and why (www.jrf.org.uk/publications/drinking-places-where-people-drink-and-why) and Alcohol and Family Life (www.jrf.org.uk/publications/alcohol-consumption-family-life). Gill has also published numerous academic papers about alcohol consumption, including articles about the continuity and change in drinking practices across different generations and hidden levels of consumption within communities that traditionally abstain from alcohol. She is a co-author (with Mark Jayne and Sarah Holloway) of the book Alcohol, Drinking and Drunkeness: (Dis)orderly Spaces (published by Ashgate in 2011). www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/people/g.valentine/
Dr Michael Wilks - President, Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME)
Michael works as a forensic physician with the Metropolitan Police, and is chairman of the Trustees of RAPT (the Rehabilitation of Addicted Prisoners Trust). He has been a general medical practitioner (GP) for over 35 years and has spent the last 15 years advising on the risk of alcohol on society and the individual.
